Spanish-American War

  • War with Spain in 1898 over the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine in Havana Harbor. Turns out she sank by accident or negligence, not deliberate action. The war was primarily agitated by William Randolph Hearst.
  • As war booty, America seized the Philippines and Cuba and Puerto Rico.
  • This war was actually very short, but seems longer today because it has subsumed the entirety of the Philippine-American War. Which is why history books don't mention the Philippine-American War.
