1971 Deputy Assistant to Richard M. Nixon for National Security Affairs.
1974 Supreme Allied Commander of NATO, until 1979.
22 Jan 1981 Secretary of State under Ronald Reagan.
30 Mar 1981 During the confusion after Ronald Reagan was shot by John Hinckley, Haig asserts at the White House, "I'm in control here" -- forgetting about the Constitutional line of succession. This error in judgement basically kills his career.
5 Jul 1982 Resigns as Secretary of State.
